The School





Öland Folk High School is a school with long and short courses for adults from the age of 18.
General Courses
If your aim is to get a basic qualification for university studies Öland Folk High School can offer you different options depending on your earlier schooling. Either you can attend the long course, The General Course, for one or two years or, if you are qualified, just attend the third year. The third year has the emphasis on either Literature and Writing or Art.
The qualification needed for university studies comprehend the following subjects: Swedish, Mathematics, English, Science, Religion and Social Studies. In order to make sure you choose the right course you will be guided in organizing your studies both when you apply here and at the school start.
Specific Courses
Art and Design, Musictheatre, Creative Writing and Documentary Film are courses given for one school year while Health and Quality of Life is a one-semester course.
In the afternoons, after the regular timetable, all our students are able to study different core subjects.
After the completion of a course you get a report or certificate on that specific course.
Activities after School Hours
Painting, Sketching, Culture Café, Film Club, Study Circles, Work Out are among the activities arranged by the teachers or the pupils' council.
The School
Öland Folk High School is situated about five kilometres south-east of Färjestaden. It's a half hour's bus ride to Kalmar. The school is run by Kalmar County Council.
At Öland Folk High School there are about 200 students in the long courses. Approximately 10.000 individuals participate in a wide range of short courses, study circles and different cultural events carried out during a whole year. The school is a boarding school and has accomodation for about 100 persons. The rest of the students in the long courses either commute or live in the vicinity.
Studying at a Folk High School
The freedom allotted to the folk high schools to create their courses according to the special profile and direction of the school, allows the course participants a wide range of opportunities to influence the aims and contents of their course, according to their current knowledge, interests and needs. Characteristic for the folk high school way of teaching is that it often uses theme studies and project work. Here the students' experiences from work and social life are great assets.
When studying at Öland Folk High School it is preferable to have knowledge of Swedish, verbally and in writing as the teaching is in Swedish.
